Concrete is durable, easy to maintain, repairable and it permanent. Modern concrete can be cast into intricate shapes, and can be given a matt, satin or textured finish. It can be made to imitate many natural materials, and is more sophisticated than many realize. Add to that the fact that it is a durable material that will last for 40 years or more should you decide to keep it that long.
If you’re building a concrete countertop it is essential that you at least have a working knowledge of how concrete is laid out, cured and sealed even if you don’t do the actual work by yourself. The best way to cure concrete is to wet-cure’ it - you can achieve this by placing wet towels or plastic sheets over the concrete. Concrete cures without shrinking and this helps to build its strength and allows it to resist shrinkage forces better when it dries out. Wet-curing results in efflorescence marks on the concrete, though.
